Planetary Gears Principles Of Operation

Top Gear Transmissions offers three types of planetary gearbox, wheel drive, shaft power, and spindle power. Here is what they are and how they work.

WHEEL DRIVE

In a wheel drive planetary gearbox, the sun gear drives a peripheral planetary gear fixed to the carrier. When the sun gear is driven, the planetary gear rotates the outer ring gear. The wheel can be mounted over the housing of the gearbox. The assembly size can be minimized by mounting the wheel directly to the gearbox. Wheel drive planetary gears can provide up to 332,000 Nm of torque.

SHAFT OUTPUT

In the shaft drive gearbox, the sun gear drives the surrounding planetary gears contained in a rotating carrier. The ring gear is fixed as a rotating carrier transfers the drive to the shaft.

The housing of the gearbox is fixed directly to the machine whose output is the axis of rotation. Our range of shaft output gears can provide up to 113,000 Nm of torque.

What are planetary gears used for?

Planetary gear sets can be used for a variety of purposes. We offers a set of planetary gears for use in industrial and mobile applications.

Our planetary gearboxes are used in the following fields:

  • Wheel drive
  • Drive tracking
  • conveyor
  • Slew drive
  • Hoist drive
  • incorporation
  • Winch drive
  • slipper
  • Coil tube injector
  • Auger and Drilling Drive
  • Cutter head drive

The planetary gear set is available in stages and offers a variety of transmission ratio options that can be adjusted to suit your needs.
